Our boy is SO chic....

.....that he visited his first plastic surgeon today. :O) He was born with a preauricular tag by his left ear which was charming enough for us but that we knew might cause him some future grief from peers or otherwise. Our pediatrician referred us to a plastic surgeon and they spent literally five minutes removing it today. All ended up well. Actually, we were thankful it existed because it was one of the first things we noticed the night he was born and it assured us there was no crazy hospital baby mix-up when it was time to come home.

Here is a pretty good shot of the tag, taken when he was 5 days old (BTW, HOLY GIANT PACIFIER, BATMAN!)

And here he is today, happy enough with the procedure to practice his clapping.

Ohhh...were you freaking out about having it done? I would've been in a tizzy. Just worrying about him crying and the numbing and everything else. I'm sure you're glad that's over and you can forget about it. He's so cute.

YES. I was a basket case. The nurses were so sweet though and they don't let the parents (or wouldn't let ME) go to the back where it's done. She just carried him off and returned him to me about 7 minutes later. He was sniffing a little bit, but she said he only screamed with the numbing shot and then started to calm down by the time they took it off. They wrapped him up in a sheet to restrain him, which I'm sure scared him, but the good thing is he won't remember any of this barbarianism. :O)

MK...I don't even notice the skin tag in the pictures. Am I stupid???? He's so beautiful! I'm glad he survived the surgery! I wish my mom would have thought to do that with my "beauty mark" on my cheek. I've always hated it. It's minor, but now that I'm an adult it would leave a bigger scar than the mole itself. I've inquired about getting it removed and all of a sudden its a big deal... So, coming from a slightly imperfect human (insert laughter!), GOOD JOB thinking of the future for the little man!!!

Hi Mary Katherine, I found your blog when I was searching for information about infants and their surgeries to remove ear tags. My son is 13 months and is scheduled to have his one tag removed tomorrow and I am extremely nervous. I like reading about other people's experience though - makes me less nervous!
Thank you for sharing! Your son is a cutie!

I found you on a google search for preauricular tags as well...your little one is famous...anyway, we didn't have my daughter's removed early on (slightly bigger than his, but still just a single tag), which was based on bad advice from her pediatrician. Now she is 7 and it's still there, but it doesn't seem to bother her. It helps that her hair is fuzzy and all over the place. But I do wish we'd gone ahead and done it when she was young enough not to really notice...

Hi, my fourteen month old son has a skin tag of similar size and in the exact same location as your little boy's. Recently my wife and I spoke to a health service consultant who recommended the small operation to remove it. However, when he explained about the cartilage inside and the incision that would have to be made it sounded like the scar might be worse than the actual tag.
Was that the case with your son?
