new pediatricians, vaccinations, and roadblocks, oh my!

there will be no capitalization in this post because i really should be in bed and, most importantly, am tired of being expected to follow rules. yeah - it's one of those kinds of posts...

i am one of those moms who demands an alternative vaccination schedule for my kid. why? the short of it is the recent concern that links certain vaccines to autism. yes, 99% of the medical community says the shots contain no more mercury (the suspect autism trigger), but what about the doctor who still has a stash he is trying to get rid of? and yes, they say parents of autistic children feel the need to blame someone for the illness, so vaccines are an easy target. and yes, autism typically rears its head, mostly in boys, between 12-24 months, which just happens to be the time kids get the shot, so many medical professionals deem this to be more coincidence than concern. still, i am altering the schedule... better to be safe than sorry, right?

andrew has gotten most of his shots basically on time (i do believe in the responsibility of community health) with a few exceptions and/or delays at my request. the main scary one is mmr (measles, mumps, and rubella). he was due for the mmr vaccine at 12 months. we were still in tx. i declined it. he was over 15 months when we saw the brand-new sc pediatrician (who i initially really liked) and i declined it again, asking about the possibility of [dr d, let's call him] splitting it up. dr d said he supported me in my decision and i needed to look into ordering the three separate shots, or else delay the combined mmr until 2-3 years of age. he also said i would have trouble finding them separated but if i did, he would be happy to administer them. i was slightly annoyed by a highly-paid professional requesting that i do his work, but i marched on. i spoke to six different pharmacists, all of whom treated me as a crazy woman, until i finally found out that merck does carry the separate vaccines, however, they don't sell to consumers and the doctor would have to order the shots. silly me. back to the drawing board. hindsight would tell me dr d had sent me on a wild goose chase, but still i trudged on. i spoke to dr d's very flippant nurse and she assured me she would check into ordering them for me. after two days of hearing nothing back, i called her again. "oh, i was meaning to call you," she said. "we can order them, but you have to buy the box of ten for each shot." 30 freaking shots for 3 i needed. ludicrous. i asked if maybe they could buy the boxes since i was sure other parents would be interested in purchasing single versions of the shot. she very matter-of-factly told me that i was the only person she had ever heard of who requested the split shots. no deal. i told her thank you and was online the next minute searching for new pediatricians....

i didn't mention that insurance companies will not pay for the separate shots. my major beef here is with big brother - jon and i are exercising our rights as parents by making personal health decisions for our son in an attempt to preserve and protect his health, which will very likely save these insurance companies thousands of dollars in the future, so why do they still get to dictate major decisions like what we inject into his little body? it is so maddening. so, i am not following the rules. he will get these separate shots, no matter what the cost (mentally or financially) and the people who oppose our decision can, well, you know what they can do. it's not pleasant.

i appreciate you making your way to the end of this huge rant. please, oh please, comment. i am in major need of cheerleaders. if you're still too chicken to comment (you delurkers), then at least do me the favor of voting in the poll at the top right.

Hey babe! I've been through this same confusion, but I ended up going with the vaccinations as scheduled. Neither boy had any trouble really with any of the vaccinations.

Now....if I had a premie baby or if I had noticed adverse reactions to an previous vaccinations, or had a history of autism or other type issues in my family, then I would have changed course for sure.

So sorry you are getting the run around from the dr.

It is so frustrating to get conflicting information on just about every aspect of parenting. If you search long enough, you can find extreme pros and cons for just about everything on the internet. What is a parent to do? Find a dr you trust and feel good about, but most of all....TRUST YOUR GUT!!

Hey there! Check out ambers blog. You can get there from mine. She has a post about her very specific vaccine schedule for her baby. She also might have some great advice for you concerning this. I am at a loss. It's all overwhelming for me in combination with Sophie's already sensitive medical issues.

My pediatrician supports anyones efforts to do thier own thing. She is Amber's pediatrician too! She did tell me that she gave her own child the vaccines on the normal schedule. She has a 4 year old. That made me feel a bit better, not great, but a bit better.

Found the link to the post Heidi was referring to, in case the readers want to take a peek (you might have to copy/paste):

It's pretty close to the schedule we've been using with Andrew, and it's always good to see other mothers out there struggling with these concerns.

Hey, just wanted to add that with Premies you SHOULD BE MORE LEARY of vax.

In a preemies body it would affect them differenly. Brooklyn was born 3 weeks early, so she is considered preterm not premature but I am still giving her the vax like she was premature.

Heidi- If I were you, Sophie would not be gettin ANY VAX (or maybe a VERY select few) for the first year or two.

Just my two cents!

Personally know a family severely affected by the original DTP shot (now given as DTaP). Cheerleading you to stick up for your rights and marching on for the right Doc. Andrew is fortunate to have caring/strong parents.

I am so scared about this shot! Ben's first b-day is just over a week away and his appt. is at the end of the month. I want to separate the MMR just to be safe but haven't looked into it yet. I've read similar stories on the internet about parents getting the runaround about the split shot, so I dread asking his doc (at WVU) about it.

The separate shots DO exist, so why not play it safe??? PLUS he's supposed to get like 3 OTHER shots at that appointment. It sure seems like a lot for a little guy to handle.

If you do buy 3 cases, I'd be interested in buying one of each from you. I wonder if we could use craigslist or something to find other parents to go in on a case.

Mountain Mama, that is a GREAT idea. We might end up going that route. However, I forgot to mention that the boxes of 10 are supposedly about $500 EACH. The doc knows we can't afford over $1500 in useless shots.... aarrrgh. I am continuing the good ol' research and will let ya know what I uncover.

I have some contacts in the pharmaceutical arena if you want me to do some checking about how to get the meds without buying 10x what you really need.

Good for you, MK, stand your ground. Lucas has had no shots at this point, he will be 1 in Nov. I plan on getting him SOME vac. but while he is still a breastfed baby and not in daycare, I do not feel his little body needs the toxins. MMR diseases are not common and not serious, except in rare instances. It is a live virus shot and has many controversial ingredients. I will give Lucas the shot, but I plan on waiting until he is at least 4. I could go on and on about this one, but I won't fill your blog. Keep shopping around until you find the ped. who shares your values. They are out there. Good luck.

I'm scared now!! I did get sophie's first round of 2 months vaccines. You see, IF she gets sick with one of those biggies, it could really kill her with the whole shunt thing. Infections are a real concern...That being said, I opted to hold off on MMR until the LATEST possible time. I also am happy to announce that they gave Sophie the new oral Flu vaccine (rotovirus) and she happily threw it up all over the nurse. So, at least that one isn't in her system. I don't have her paperwork to tell you which ones she got... I'll look and beg for advice!! I have been so scared about her other medical issues that I never had a chance to read up on vaccines. We should have because let's face it, what can go wrong, has gone wrong with this little one!

I got the combined shots, but I didn't know about all the possible side affects at the time, like with the chicken pox vaccine. Now they need a booster for it to still work.

I am not fond of most doctors and have had run ins with them. They think they're god, and we don't know what we're talking about.
